This month the line up of bands goes as follows:

Friday 1 June / 11pm-YOU DROP (4am, lightweights) Make sure you get down early for this one, as it RAMS.

Mmoths who recently played at The Great Escape here in Brighton so now you get a chance to check these out (AWESOME).

Solar Bears: Think acoustic instruments + synths + vintage tape machines. I’m looking forward to this one a bunch, you should be too.

Then Brighton’s very own Physics House Band (worth checking out!) are treating you to a late set, and last but certainly not least, The Neat will keep you swaying the night away with your cans of Red Stripe glued to your paws, by this point.

Steven Patrick Morrissey, I love you. I loved your hair, your passionate vegetarian speeches, and most of all your swinging of those flowers in ‘This Charming Man’, which I first set my eyes upon as a teen. Handsome Devil. My love for Morrissey never really ceased (until now), even as I grew up and as a miserable Mancunian teen, my heart slowly drifted and started to beat only for Ian Curtis and Co.

I was never really interested in the rave scene that came out of Factory Records, but I dipped my toe in it, in recent years when I’ve visited FAC, which I have to say is the worst club to exist in Manchester. There is nothing Manchester about it, I’m sure Curtis, Mozza, and Wilson would highly disapprove. Three floors of ‘Commercial Indie’ ‘Dubstep’ and ‘Mashups’. £1 drink nights on a Wednesday, warm Red Stripe’s for £3. FAC is not Manchester. (It’s Saturday morning so do excuse the tangents and rants that seem to be going off in all directions), but FAC as an icon, or even more absurdly so, a representation of Manchester/Madchester, the music, the 24 hour party people, I have to say this. It is dead. It has had it’s day, and hell do I wish my mother would have given birth to me 10 years prior to my actual day of birth. I’d have been all over it. It was an era, not forgotten, but dead.

Look below at the Handsome Devil, which now leads me to pose the question: Why the devil have you returned from your hiatus (silly recluse phase in LA) to return to ‘Madchester’ to perform at the MEN ARENA!?

You Are The Quarry, Ringleader of the Tormentors, and 2009’s Years of Refusal…(to accept that at your age 52, these albums are killing me, and your beautiful and sassy departure into the mysterious hiatus, is now broken)

When EMI released Very Best of Morrissey last year, I lusted over the album cover but refused to buy it. Why? Because I already own most of the tracks, and his attempt to re-launch his career, to me, has been a sad, tear filled, failure. I’m going to kill myself for saying this BUT, the ‘CROONER’ has now decided to put his ‘come back’ show on at the MEN arena, and is charging between £35-55 per ticket. The show is in July, I won’t be in attendance as I am not a Zooey Deschanel - esque teen girl, blowing my student loan in hopes of hearing the Smiths’ ‘There Is a Light…’ and I am not Madchester Veteran, or mid 40’s Morrissey lover.

My predictions for the show: arrogance, no charming, crooning, no swinging of flowers, and the sound of hearts breaking when he doesn’t perform the Smiths ‘There is a light’, to the dismay of 500 Days of Summer fans who will have travelled far and wide for this one ‘spectacular evening with Morrissey’.

Sorry Morry, but my love for you has faded and I’m not scraping my empty barrel of pennies to see you croon like Dave Diamond down at the local labour club on a Friday night. I can get 2 pints and an evening of that for less than £6.

Today sucked. So I did my usual rounds of scouring twitter and other Brighton based sites to see how I could spend my Thursday evening. My options were to either pay £50 for a wristband to enter “The Great Escape” (a shitty festival, with 89% shitty bands) filled with STREET kids, actual kids and over 40’s looking for something cool and edgy to chat about in the office tomorrow. My other option was to pester Bass Drum of Death on twitter as to where their show was in Brighton. A couple of minutes after my second or third tweet I got a reply “u don’t need a wristband, it’s free”.

Five minutes later, Keys,Money, Lipstick (in reality, tobacco, £4, keys and a jacket), I dashed and dodged down jubilee street, through the crowds of promo girls for tonight’s ‘parties’ and old couples, till I reached Fitzherberts. The place reeked of beer and smoke so I made my way upstairs to the box like room where Bass Drum of Death would be playing.

I caught the last two tracks of ‘Dear Prudence’ who sounded cool, but my main priority was to barge to the bar, get a pint and get down to the front. Once this set had finished, the street girls and Brighton art students quickly departed. I was then surrounded by two Bridget Jones-esque reviewers/journalists and a guy in his 50’s. Around 7.20 (fashionably late) Both guys came on stage, with complimentary bottles of Asahi, and started their 5/6 song long set.

(Props to One Inch Badge http://www.oibrecords.com/ for putting this show on, screw the Great Escape, these guys put on new music, for free in pubs. They also put out a bunch of records and book a lot of new and amazing bands/artists to play in sunny Brighton)

40 minutes of riffs and drum beats you’d expect to hear at some dodgy underground club in Manchester. I think they finished with heartbreak kid, and a few claps from the 20 or so people who were in the room.

I finished my beer and tweeted again to try and get to their headline show tonight, but my northern charm via Twitter failed miserably.

4/5. Gnarly, Rad, Sick, Whatever set, but too short.

Note to reader: Bridget Jones-esque ladies, don’t attend shows in pubs and make notes on your iPhone 4s the whole time, whilst bopping and spilling beer onto my shoes. I understand you’re super professional, but get drunk and get IT.

Arto Saari’s story is nothing short of miraculous. Obviously he’s naturally gifted and skated his ass off as a kid, but his rise to prominence is like no one else’s. If you wanted to describe it to someone who doesn’t skate, you could say: Imagine a boy from a faraway country showing up at the World Series and asking if he can play. And not only does he play, but he hits four home runs and becomes the MVP. That’s basically what Arto did; he showed up at the best place to show off your skills as a walk-on and kicked off one of the most apex (that’s Arto’s word for amazing) skate careers of all time.
